Orthopedics

Steve Miff
Vice President, Sg2
Steve leads the Orthopedics Membership at Sg2, including the areas of rehabilitation and spine care. His diverse background includes academic and government-sponsored clinical research, experience in the administrative functions of a large hospital operating room and participation in an orthopedic private practice. Steve also teaches an undergraduate biomechanics course at Northwestern University, where he serves as an adjunct professor in the biomedical engineering department.

Chicago Institute of Orthopedics
Dr. Cherf has over 15 years of clinical experience in sports medicine and knee surgery. He founded Midwest Orthopedic Institute, an orthopedic group with full integration of diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, ambulatory surgery, and occupational medicine under one roof. He presently practices in Chicago and is one of the founding members of the Orthopedic Department at the Neurologic and Orthopedic Institute of Chicago.

Senior Vice President, Accelero Health Partners
Joe works in close partnership with healthcare organizations and physicians to design and implement service line programs, including the Human Motion Institute program for musculoskeletal service lines. He has over 15 years of experience with musculoskeletal service line organization for a large academic tertiary care hospital system and has been involved in the analysis and implementation of service line strategies in over 150 hospitals across the United States, Europe, and Dubai.

Manager of Surgical Services, Yale New Haven Hospital
Betty is currently the Manager of Surgical Services for the Ambulatory Surgical Division at Yale New Haven Hospital. In addition to her management role she is the Service Line Leader for the Hand Program and has over 25 years of clinical and managerial experience in the perioperative and operating room setting. Betty has been involved with new surgical program development and surgical service lines during the past 10 years.

Wade Johannessen

Wade leads the research and development of many of Sg2’s orthopedic and spine resources and educational offerings, including publications, Web seminars and membership meetings. Wade brings to a research background in the mechanics of orthopedic soft tissues, including tendons, cartilage, and intervertebral discs. He leverages this background to research and review the clinical impacts of emerging orthopedic and spine technologies.

Susan has been instrumental in developing and executing the spine care program for OhioHealth and Grant Medical Center, a Level I trauma center. She is actively involved in physician recruitment and new program development for OhioHealth, and she is currently focusing on growing and expanding the neurosciences program with a goal of becoming a distinguished local and national leader, particularly for spine care.

Associate Vice President, Sg2
Dr. Winslow leads Sg2’s Cardiovascular Membership, working with his team to track the impact of emerging trends and technologies in cardiovascular care delivery. He comes to Sg2 with more than 20 years of experience in clinical cardiology on the faculties of the University of Illinois and Northwestern University. Before joining Sg2, he worked for more than 25 years in clinical and preventive cardiology, launching one of the first cardiac rehabilitation programs in an academic medical center.

Maureen is a senior healthcare executive with extensive experience in large academic medical centers including management roles in operations, strategic planning, revenue cycle, and financial analysis. In these roles she worked with large multi-specialty physician practices in collaboration with senior hospital executives to improve efficiencies in operations, develop new business lines, expand existing programs, and improve financial position through revenue cycle improvements and expense control.

Thomas G. Di Salvo, MD, MPH, MBA
Medical Director, Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute
Dr. Di Salvo is currently the medical director of the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute and Associate Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Dr. Di Salvo completed undergraduate studies at Harvard, medical school at the University of Cincinnati, residency and chief residency at Johns Hopkins and fellowship in cardiology and heart failure/cardiac transplantation at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Associate Director of Healthcare Strategy, Navigant Consulting, Inc.
John is an associate director with Navigant and has over nine years of business development and strategy experience, including pricing, market sizing, and market feasibility analysis. He started work with the Tiber Group prior to its acquisition by Navigant Consulting in 2005. His most recent work in cardiac planning was a system plan to develop an integrated and efficient cardiovascular delivery network which includes a significant physician integration component.

Beth Pittman
Regional Director, Accelero Health Partners
Beth is responsible for collaborating with Accelero Health Partners’ partner hospitals in the development and implementation of a cardiovascular service line of distinction. She accomplishes this by applying a patient-centered service line management model based on fundamental business principles. She is currently finalizing her Masters Degree in Business Administration for Healthcare Professionals from Chatham University in Pittsburgh.

Heart Failure Program Coordinator, Mary Washington Hospital
Cheri is the Heart Failure Program Coordinator and also the Operations Lead for the Heart Failure Disease Management Product Line of the Virginia Heart and Vascular Institute. She is responsible for providing vision, leadership, coordination and oversight for the activities of the HF Program, including program development, implementation, facilitation, evaluation, monitoring and consultation.

Kathleen has more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She serves as the firm’s practice leader for the New York/New England region, bringing a broad range of experience as both a hospital executive and management consultant to HS&S clients. Kathleen’s planning expertise includes strategic plan development and execution, master facility planning, and development of freestanding ambulatory care facilities.

Tracy has over 20 years of healthcare consulting experience and leads the HS&S ambulatory care practice. She has extensive experience in service line and ambulatory care strategy development, facility planning, operations improvement, demand and capacity analyses, and capital prioritization. She has a particular appreciation for how service delivery models, functional relationships, and operational efficiencies impact space and facility requirements.

James has over 30 years of managerial experience at both free-standing and university-based matrix cancer centers. He offers in-depth insight into cancer hospital operations, cancer center organization, cancer center facilities, clinical research administration as well as extramurally-supported research grants and contracts management. Prior to devoting full time to consulting, he was the Vice President for Hospital & Medical Science Administration at Fox Chase Cancer Center for 21 years.

Suzanne Borgos

Suzanne brings both clinical and strategic planning expertise to HS&S engagements. For the last five years, she has held several administrative positions at North Shore-LIJ Health System, the nation’s third largest, non-profit, secular health care system. Most recently, she was senior administrative director for neurosurgery, with responsibility for day-to-day operations, marketing, strategic planning, and programmatic growth. She managed 20 physicians and $26 million in practice revenue.

Laurie develops business strategy, organizational structure and implementation plans for new clinical programs and comprehensive multidisciplinary clinical centers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a $1.2 billion, 600+ bed Harvard Medical School affiliated hospital, including BIDMC’s Chest Disease Center, Spine Center, and Cancer Center. She is responsible for joint business planning with BIDMC’s 750 physician faculty practice.

She brings to Sg2 more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, including extensive work in pharmaceutical research, public health, and strategic planning. Before joining Sg2, Leanne led ICON Clinical Research’s global patient registry and observational research services. She oversees the development and delivery of cancer-related programming and publications.

Craig has 25 years of overall experience in the healthcare industry. He has 12 years of general hospital administrative experience, including six years as the vice president of operations of a 450-bed facility. In addition to his work as vice president of oncology for Baptist Health, he has 13 years of oncology-specific administrative experience including consulting, physician practice management, and multi-hospital product line management.

She also has supported technology committees to understand the clinical, operational and financial impacts of technology adoption.

Paula played a central role in the design and implementation of Temple Spine Center and is directly responsible for promoting neurosciences services at Temple University Hospital to referring physicians in Philadelphia and surrounding areas—direct referrals to neurosurgery and neurology programs have increased by 80% under her guidance. She has successfully recruited several neurosurgeons to the program, and has an ongoing responsibility for the physician recruitment process.

Dr. Loftus is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and the founding director of the Neuroscience Service Line at Temple University Health System. He is the Vice President for 2009-2010 of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Assistant Treasurer 2009-2013 of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

Vice President of Neurosciences, Barrow Neurological Institute of St. John’s Hospital and Medical Center
Phil is the administrator for the Barrow Neurological Institute, one of the leading neuroscience institutes in the world. His responsibilities include business development, strategic planning, marketing, physician recruitment, and major capital equipment acquisition. His career includes heading a specialty consulting firm that provided sales and marketing management consulting to hospitals across the country.

Lauren Brandt
Clinical Program Director for Neurosciences, Seton Family of Hospitals
Lauren is responsible for program development of neurosciences for the Seton Brain & Spine Institute in Austin, TX. In addition, she is an advanced practice nurse and works collaboratively with a local neurosurgeon. She graduated from University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s in Nursing, and received her Masters degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at the Health Science Center in San Antonio. One of the most successful programs is the Seton Family of Hospitals stroke program.
